Jiangyuan (John) Lin is a first-year PhD student in Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests include immigration, race and ethnicity, intimate relationships and families, gender, and sexuality. He is particularly interested in examining (im)migrants' experiences of dating and partnership, with attention to how their ethnic and sexual identity and immigrant generation intersect in intimate life. He is also interested in the experiences of LGBTQ+ migrants and in how immigrant families understand and navigate race and racism across generations. Methodologically, his research draws on qualitative interviews and survey experiments.

John received his M.A. in Social Science from the University of Chicago in 2025, along with a Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies, and his Honours B.A. in Sociology and Economics from the University of Toronto in 2024.

Outside of academia, he enjoys cooking, exploring local restaurants and events, playing board games, walking through new neighborhoods, and visiting museums.
